Welcome MVC Board of Director – Kyla Richey

Mariners Volleyball Club is proud to welcome Kyla Richey to its Board of Directors. A former captain of the Canadian Women’s National Volleyball Team, Kyla brings over a decade of international playing experience.

Over her distinguished career, Kyla represented Canada in more than 250 international matches, competing in numerous NORCECA Championships, Pan American Games, and FIVB World Championships. She also played professionally across Europe, including top leagues in Italy, France, Turkey, and Germany, where she developed a strong understanding of high-performance training, team culture, and athlete leadership. Her transition from elite player to mentor and advocate has been marked by her commitment to empowering young women through sport.

This past fall, Kyla has already been contributing to the Mariners community through her work with the Mariners Fall Development Program, where she has been actively coaching and mentoring athletes in the 14U–16U age group.

In her role on the Board of Directors, Kyla will bring her marketing skill set and will continue to work with our 14U–16U female programs supporting the continued growth of athletes and helping shape next generation of athletes to reach their full potential.

Her experience, professionalism, and passion for the game make her an invaluable addition to the Mariners leadership team.

Welcome Board of Director – Dr. Abe Avender

Mariners Volleyball Club is proud to welcome Dr. Abe Avender to its Board of Directors. Abe brings a wealth of experience in athlete development, strength and conditioning, and high-performance program design.

Abe currently serves as the Head Coach of the Vancouver Island University (VIU) Men’s Volleyball Team. In addition to his collegiate coaching experience, Abe was part of the medical staff for the Canadian Men’s National Team at the 2024 Olympic Games, contributing to the team’s preparation and performance on the international stage. His involvement with the national program highlights his deep understanding of high-performance systems and his ability to support athletes competing at the sport’s highest level.

Beyond the court, Abe is the owner of Island Optimal, a multidisciplinary health and performance clinic based in Nanaimo, BC, where he leads a team of professionals dedicated to optimizing human performance through physiotherapy, strength and conditioning, and holistic wellness. His expertise in sport science and athlete care makes him uniquely positioned to support Mariners Volleyball Club with athlete athletic performance and long-term health.

Abe’s combination of high-performance experience, professional expertise, and commitment to athlete growth makes him an outstanding addition to the Mariners Board of Directors.

Welcome MVC Board of Director – Elise Keeping

Mariners Volleyball Club is proud to welcome Elise Keeping to its Board of Directors. As a Mariners alumnus and former Team BC regional athlete, Elise has a lifelong connection to volleyball and a strong commitment to nurturing the next generation of athletes.

Elise’s playing career includes helping lead the Ladysmith 49ers to their first-ever Provincial Championship medal in 2015, earning silver. Since then, she has dedicated herself to coaching and developing young athletes at both the club and school levels. She has held coaching roles at John Barsby Secondary School and NDSS, contributing to a 4th-place Provincial finish in 2021, and has coached athletes across all levels within the Mariners program—from Grade 3 to Senior Girls—playing a key role in the club’s youth development initiatives.

Elise has also worked with Volleyball BC, coaching youth development programs and serving as both a head and assistant coach in the Volleyball BC Regional program, in addition to leading the BC Summer Games Island Beach team, demonstrating her versatility and leadership across indoor and beach volleyball.

Off the court, Elise is an elementary school teacher in the Nanaimo Ladysmith School District, bringing the same care, structure, and mentorship to her professional life as she does to volleyball. Her approach emphasizes athlete growth, confidence, and holistic development, making her a trusted mentor to players, parents, and coaching peers alike.

In her role on the Mariners Board of Directors, Elise will continue to focus on youth athlete development, supporting programs that foster skill development, sportsmanship, and a lifelong love of volleyball. Her deep roots in the club and dedication to athlete growth make her a valuable addition to the Mariners leadership team.
